Ketamine-Assisted EMDR Therapy (KA-EMDR)
EMDR is already one of the most effective approaches available for trauma processing. KA-EMDR takes that work further.
Ketamine Assisted EMDR Therapy™, or KA-EMDR combines EMDR with a prescribed, low-dose sublingual ketamine experience to support deeper access to memory processing and emotional integration. This is not recreational or high-dose ketamine - it's a psycholytic dose, meaning it keeps you present and able to actively participate in the session while gently softening the psychological defenses that can slow or stall trauma processing.
EMDR works by facilitating the reprocessing of both episodic memory - specific life events you can consciously recall - and implicit memory, the stored emotional and body-based experiences that shape present-day reactions outside of conscious awareness. When those defenses remain intact despite focused EMDR work, KA-EMDR can create the opening needed to reach what's been difficult to access.
Low-dose ketamine has been shown to reduce activity in the Default Mode Network - the part of the brain associated with rumination and self-critical thinking - while enhancing neuroplasticity and increasing cognitive and emotional flexibility. The result can be a state that supports more efficient memory reconsolidation and deeper therapeutic processing.
KA-EMDR was developed by Danielle Ciccone and Michele Topel, co-founders of the Ketamine Assisted EMDR Therapy™ Institute, and is a specific, structured protocol - not simply EMDR and ketamine offered side by side. I have trained with Michele and Danielle to administer their protocol.
Is This a Good Fit?
KA-EMDR may be worth exploring if you:
Have done EMDR work and feel limited by persistent defenses or a sense of being stuck
Are looking for deeper or more accelerated processing
Feel genuinely curious about working in an altered state as part of your healing
Are able to engage in preparation and integration work as part of the process
This is specialized work, and it isn't right for everyone. We'll assess fit carefully before moving forward.
What to Know Before We Start
KA-EMDR requires a medical evaluation and prescription from a licensed medical provider - I do not prescribe, administer, or supply ketamine. You'll work with a collaborating medical provider who will review your history, current medications, and overall appropriateness for this approach. That conversation happens before any KA-EMDR sessions begin.
This protocol does not guarantee symptom relief. Outcomes depend on a range of individual factors including trauma history, nervous system regulation, and readiness for reprocessing work.
Fees and Scheduling
KA-EMDR sessions are private-pay only and are not billed to insurance. Payment is due at the time of scheduling. In keeping with federal regulations, a Good Faith Estimate will be provided before treatment begins.
Sessions are typically 60–90 minutes. Frequency is individualized and may range from a single focused session to periodic sessions spaced weeks or months apart, integrated within a broader treatment plan. Preparation and integration sessions are strongly recommended.
